Reforestation in Santa Fe: UNL’s Initiative

On the occasion of the Graduates’ Day commemoration (April 15th), the National University of the Litoral (**UNL**) carried out a reforestation initiative in Santa Fe.

It delivered **300 white carob trees** to the Municipality to be planted in the **Botanical Garden** of the city.

This is the implementation of a program called “One tree, one graduate”. Its objective is to plant native species in different locations of the province.

The rector of the UNL, **Enrique Mammarella**, presented the program and commented on its objectives. “It is similar to what has happened in the lives of our graduates: it starts from the seed collected by the university, they are native species related to the region and they have to repopulate the thorn forest in our region with native trees,” he said.

“We take care of them, **we allow the seeds to germinate** and these trees are cared for at the university for a certain period and are grown from seed by UNL students,” added Mammarella.

On the other hand, the Mayor of Santa Fe, **Juan Pablo Poletti**, expressed his “great joy” and gratitude for the collaboration with the university.

“One tree for each graduate is truly a brilliant idea to leave a legacy beyond the joy of graduating, striving, achieving the title and today **each dean represents each of their graduates**, in each faculty to leave that legacy to society, to our children, to our grandchildren,” he said.

“We aim to plant 3,000 trees this year, that is the goal. Then we want to reach 5,000,” Poletti specified. “We want a total of **10,000 trees in this term**. This is what we have set out to do and we have as our goal,” he stated.

Also, as part of reforestation initiatives, the **San Francisco Industrial Park** in San Justo, Córdoba recently launched a project.

It will work with primary schools to plant native trees. It is called **”Planting my Footprint”**, and aims to raise awareness among children about environmental care through the germination of local flora.

The initiative is carried out in collaboration with educational institutions, the **municipality, the Penitentiary Service, and local companies**. Another aspect of the program also promotes the circular economy through plastic recycling.

The program is aimed at the second cycle of primary level in public and private schools.

As explained by the Industrial Park, the **proposal includes an initial training for directors and students, as well as technical support throughout the process**. It will go from **germination to the final planting of the trees**.
