The cosmetics industry is increasingly embracing ecological and natural practices, seeking to reduce or eliminate the use of chemical additives in their production. For this reason, they opt for plants from organic farming, ensuring greater respect for personal care and the environment.
According to the European Cosmetic Regulation, “a cosmetic is any substance or preparation intended to be placed in contact with the various superficial parts of the human body, or with the teeth and oral mucous membranes. With the exclusive or main purpose of cleaning, perfuming, modifying their appearance, or maintaining contact.”
This would be the definition of a traditional cosmetic, but what is the difference between natural and ecological cosmetics, also known as “econatural”? The main difference is that econatural cosmetics use natural ingredients, grown organically.
In other words, cosmetic products are those that include active ingredients derived from plants, flowers, and minerals that respect both the environment and the skin of the people who use them.

What are the benefits of natural and ecological cosmetics?
This type of natural cosmetics has many benefits for the skin and the environment, including:
Skin Health
Econatural cosmetics manufacture products free of toxic ingredients, so the skin absorbs active ingredients better and remains healthy. Furthermore, it helps prevent the appearance of allergies, redness, irritation, and skin reactions.
Environment
The production of natural cosmetics reduces the consumption of non-renewable resources, while promoting the sustainable use of ingredients. Additionally, it does not contain microplastics that harm marine life, thus not generating toxic waste.
Ethics
Natural cosmetics avoid experimentation and testing on animals, a practice that is being phased out, while also promoting fair trade.
Other Benefits
Natural cosmetics can help reduce carcinogenic effects, increase the skin’s natural transpiration, and decrease hormonal blockers.

How to tell if a cosmetic is natural?
To determine if it is a natural and ecological product, attention must be paid to its formula, as it should be made with ingredients found in nature, or considered natural, such as components of animal and plant origin.
More specifically, these products should have a formula that includes, at least, 90% of natural raw materials or bear the certification seal.
