Green loan: the credit line that commits Argentine banks to the environment

Although not widely known, individuals and SMEs in Argentina can access green credit lines offered by banks to promote technologies that reduce environmental degradation.

Among these options – which have preferential interest rates – the aim is to finance projects related to renewable energies, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, sustainable natural resource management, among other environmental initiatives.

The commitment to clean energies starts with changing habits. For this reason, several banks consider the option of using these credits to finance everyday equipment, such as appliances or electronics with an energy efficiency certificate.

Green credit lines promote the purchase of solar panels and the use of clean energies.

Green financing options in Argentine banks

Among the main banking institutions that offer this type of credits, we find:

  • Banco Nación: Efficiency Energy and Sustainable Mobility Loan. It is aimed at individuals and the amount can reach up to $100,000,000 pesos. Term up to 72 months. The goal is to acquire sustainable products such as refrigerators with energy efficiency label A+, TVs and monitors A+, solar panels, LED lighting systems, electric motorcycles, bicycles, among others.
  • Banco Provincia: Green Line is an alternative to buy white line appliances labeled with energy efficiency level A or higher. Loans can reach up to $50,000,000 pesos with a payment term of up to 72 months.
  • Banco Ciudad: Sustainable Projects is a loan line focused on supporting SMEs committed to the environment. It finances the acquisition of goods with the aim of increasing the use of renewable energies or improving energy efficiency. For example, companies wanting to develop projects with solar or wind energy can apply for this line. It has a fixed interest rate and a term of 60 months.
  • Banco Galicia: Sustainable Financing Program. It is open for triple impact projects, meaning they not only generate economic benefits but also positive impacts for society and the environment. Maximum amount $10,000,000 with a term of up to 12 months.
  • Banco BBVA: Sustainable Purposes. With this loan, sustainable goods or services can be financed such as solar water heaters, bicycles, laundry machines with inverter technology, equipment for organic crops. It has a maximum amount of $70,000,000, with a fixed rate, and up to 60 months term.

In addition to these entities, the Federal Investment Council, a public body that promotes provincial development, offers a Green Financing line. Here, SMEs can seek loans for the purchase of technified irrigation equipment, renewable energies, or the implementation of waste management designs, among others. The requested amount can reach up to $150,000,000 pesos.

Banks also offer these green loans for SMEs looking to switch their lighting system to LED lights.

Banks must enhance environmental commitment

The report by the “Sustainability Assessment of Banking in Latin America”, published by WWF this year, indicates that – although green credit lines are expanding – there is a lack of greater inclusion of market actors in the middle and lower segments. The document mentions the need to enhance access channels and technical support for SMEs and rural communities.

Only 18% of the banks surveyed in this study offer capacity development programs on environmental issues for small and medium enterprises.

“Strengthening the reach of clients and expanding personalized solutions for smaller actors will accelerate progress towards expanding green financial solutions,” WWF emphasizes in the document.
