Natural hair dyes are perfect for covering gray hair, changing hair color, or simply toning it. The main difference between these dyes and traditional ones lies in their preparation, as their composition is free of aggressive chemicals (such as ammonia). Additionally, their formulas contain natural ingredients with very beneficial properties for the hair and their pigments adhere to the root in an effective way, providing a long-lasting effect.
These ecological and natural dyes are exclusively made with ingredients from plants that provide pigments or act as color fixatives. Among the most common are henna (Lawsonia inermis), indigo, amla, cassia, bhringraj, neem, hibiscus, rhubarb, and turmeric. Some of these formulas also include vegetable oils essential for caring for and nourishing the hair.
According to experts, a 100% natural dye is free of chemical substances such as hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, PPD, synthetic dyes, or other components that, although effective, can weaken the hair fiber by opening the cuticle and altering natural pigments.
However, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) warns that many brands use terms like “natural” or “herbal” on their products, accompanied by images suggesting plant ingredients, but actually contain permanent chemical dyes. These products often include chemical components like hydrogen peroxide, oxidation dyes, and alkaline agents (such as ethanolamine instead of ammonia) used to fix the color.
How to identify a truly natural dye?
To ensure that a dye is truly natural, check the label for plant extracts like sweet almond oil (Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil) and make sure it does not contain ingredients like paraffins, petroleum-derived mineral oils, silicones, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, or antibacterials like BHT, BHA, or triclosan.
In fact, henna dye and henna leaves are the most popular natural dyes, as they provide a semi-permanent color lasting between 4 and 8 weeks, but they have certain limitations:
- They do not lighten the hair.
- Limited color range to dark and reddish tones.
- Not recommended for gray or blond hair (the result may have a greenish hue).
- Incompatibility with previous chemical dyes, as the final tone is unpredictable.
These products can be found in herbal shops, usually in powder form. But for a truly ecological option, pure henna is one of the most reliable and natural alternatives available.
What are its benefits?
- Softer and gradual results: no root effect is produced.
- Less hair damage: They do not contain chemicals like ammonia or hydrogen peroxide, which can irritate the scalp and damage the hair fiber.
- Cruelty-free: these vegan dyes are not tested on animals.
- Hydration and shine: natural pigments wrap around the hair fiber, providing hydration and shine.
- Lower risk of allergic reactions: They usually have a low allergenic index.
- Lower environmental impact: they are ecological and sustainable, therefore, environmentally friendly.
Natural dyes are a good option for pregnant or lactating individuals, people with allergies or sensitivity to chemicals, and those seeking a more natural and sustainable lifestyle.
