In an operation in Castelli, Chaco, 109 exotic and native birds were rescued. The episode exposed a network of possession and possible wildlife trafficking.
The raid took place on Monday in the Las Palomas neighborhood, following the order of the Juzgado de Garantías. Why it is not an isolated case and what are the consequences of this crime.
Operation and Wildlife Trafficking in Chaco: Exotic Birds Rescued
The procedure took place on Monday morning at a private residence. It was ordered by the Fiscalía de Investigación Rural y Ambiental de San Martín, led by prosecutor Noelia Beatriz Miño.
They also had the support of veterinarian Jairo José Melgarejo.
According to reports, during the inspection, the authorities found 109 birds of different species, including nymph cockatiels, cardinals, lovebirds, Australian budgerigars, thrushes, canaries, and a tinamou, among others.
They also found 15 crates with eggs and chicks, suggesting that illegal breeding activities were taking place on the premises, possibly for commercial purposes.
They also found a Pincher breed dog in deplorable conditions, showing clear signs of malnutrition and severe dermatitis. The veterinary professionals who intervened also took care of the dog.
All the animals were taken to the Municipal Zoo of Roque Sáenz Peña, where they received medical attention and were placed in quarantine for clinical evaluation.
According to judicial sources, these types of procedures include an individual assessment of the animals’ health, and in many cases, lead to rehabilitation programs, conservation, or relocation to suitable environments.
The Judicial Case and the Danger of Trafficking
The judicial case focuses on the alleged network of possession and possible wildlife trafficking. This is a crime that threatens biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems in northern Argentina.
The operation is part of a comprehensive strategy promoted by the Public Ministry of Chaco and provincial and municipal agencies to combat wildlife trafficking.
The concern lies in the fact that this is not an isolated incident. This case adds to a similar operation recently carried out in the province of Córdoba, where 94 exotic birds were rescued in the town of Santa Rosa de Calamuchita.
Both cases reflect a worrying pattern: the increase in illegal trade of species in different regions of the country, often fueled by the demand for exotic pets in informal markets.
Chaco’s judiciary reported that the investigation remains open. They are seeking to determine the criminal and administrative responsibilities of those involved.
