The metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires continue to experience unstable weather due to a humid front that has caused intermittent rain and reduced visibility. According to the forecast, this Wednesday scattered drizzles are expected to continue, accompanied by a mostly cloudy sky, with temperatures fluctuating between 8°C and 14°C.
El Niño and its influence on the AMBA’s climate
The persistent rains in the center of the country are not mere isolated events. Scientists attribute this climatic instability to the El Niño phenomenon, which is increasing both the frequency and severity of bad weather conditions in the region.
During the afternoon, a gradual improvement in weather conditions is expected with a decrease in cloudiness, allowing some sunlight to enter before temperatures drop again at nightfall.
According to the National Meteorological Service, although the precipitation will give a respite, the cold and clouds will continue to be present for the rest of the week. This improvement will be gradual, with the sun making sporadic appearances.
Carolina Vera, a researcher at the CONICET and former vice president of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), highlights that El Niño is generating lower than usual pressures in the central-west of the country, thus facilitating the appearance of these adverse weather patterns.
The low-level jet stream, a flow of winds that carries moisture from the Amazon basin, interacts with the cold air coming from Patagonia, creating prolonged cloud blockages.
