Naval forces in Mexico remove 7,897 tons of sargassum from 37 out of 40 affected beaches in Quintana Roo

On the coasts of Mexico, a swarm of naval personnel fights daily against the growing invasion of sargassum in the region known as Costa Maya. Throughout 2026, more than 7,897 tons of this macroalgae have been removed from the beaches of Mahahual and Xcalak, according to an official statement from the Navy Secretariat.

Impact of Sargassum on the Beaches of Mexico

The massive arrival of sargassum in Quintana Roo has been described as an atypical phenomenon by the authorities. This problem is not only seasonal but requires a constant response of machinery, barriers, and personnel, in collaboration with local tourism entrepreneurs.

The containment operation covers 2,200 meters of barriers and the coordination of different governmental and commercial entities. The Mexican Navy seeks to minimize the effects of sargassum, preventing it from covering the entire coastline and quickly removing the algae that manage to reach the shore.

The beaches of Mahahual and Xcalak are at the center of the issue. The local economy, dependent on tourism and fishing, suffers when the waters are affected by sargassum, negatively impacting economic activity.

The environmental traffic light map indicates that 37 out of 40 monitored beaches present an excessive level of sargassum, which is alarming for the tourism industry that must resort to its own resources to complement cleaning efforts.

In the open sea, sargassum offers a habitat for various marine species, but its massive arrival on the coast translates into an environmental and public health problem, according to NOAA. As it decomposes, it produces hydrogen sulfide, which emits an unpleasant odor and can be harmful to human health.

The situation is further complicated because in the Atlantic, sargassum reaches record levels, transported by ocean currents that deposit it on the coasts of the Caribbean and southeastern Florida. This necessitates continuous monitoring and a rapid response.

The implemented floating barriers work partially, as marine conditions can exceed their capacity, requiring manual collection. This is a logistical and financial challenge for affected communities, especially in less developed areas.

The comprehensive solution requires satellite monitoring, diversion of sargassum at sea, and safe collection and processing strategies on land. Research into the use of sargassum in products such as fertilizers is underway, but it must be managed carefully due to the presence of contaminants in the algae.

In conclusion, the phenomenon cannot be addressed in isolation by each municipality; it requires a coordinated regional action based on scientific data and international collaboration.
