Hemp Oil: Study Shows its Effectiveness as Skin Medicine, a Natural and Eco-Friendly Solution

According to a new study, hemp oil is more effective than conventional antibiotics in the treatment of skin wounds. That’s right, in addition to being a highly nutritious food, it is now also known to have healing properties.

The novel research is based on murine laboratory models and published in the Narra J journal.

This study has highlighted the promising properties of hemp seed oil in the treatment of skin wounds. Researchers from Universitas Syiah Kuala (Indonesia) observed that the topical application of hemp oil not only accelerates the reduction of wound size, but also promotes key processes such as epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and vascularization.

According to the authors, hemp seed oil could be a natural and economical solution to complement conventional therapies in the treatment of wounds.

Hemp Oil vs Antibiotics: Research Results

The study compared three groups of guinea pigs: one treated with hemp seed oil, one with the common antibiotic chloramphenicol, and one with a simple saline solution.

Days 14 and 21: hemp oil has proven to be more effective in wound reduction than chloramphenicol.

Epithelialization: both treatments favored the formation of new tissue, but the oil showed a particularly significant effect on day 14.

Granulation tissue: accelerated especially on day 14 with the oil, which on day 21 showed a more advanced and organized structure than the other groups.

Vascularization: by day 21, hemp oil promoted the formation of a stronger vascular network, an essential element for optimal healing.

The researchers point out that, although at times the two treatments are comparable, hemp seed oil seems to offer an advantage especially in the most delicate phases of healing.

The Role of Hemp’s Bioactive Compounds

The observed efficacy is not attributable to a single active substance, but to the combined action of the numerous compounds present in the entire hemp plant:

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6): regulate inflammatory processes.

Terpenoids and flavonoids: strong antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress and promote tissue repair.

Cannabinoids like CBD: anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, essential for preventing infections and balancing the immune response.

This synergy, explain the researchers, allows hemp seed oil to effectively support both the inflammatory and proliferative phases of healing.

A Broader Picture: Cannabis and Skin Health

The Indonesian research is part of a rapidly growing scientific trend that explores the use of cannabis and its derivatives in the treatment of wounds and skin conditions.

A 2023 review published in Pharmaceutics highlighted the benefits of cannabis flower extract oil in reducing oxidative stress (ROS), one of the key factors hindering tissue regeneration.

Recent studies have shown that CBD promotes healing by modulating gene expression during all phases of the repair process, with possible applications also in anti-aging cosmetics and protective products.

Multiple applications of hemp oil

CBD and CBG ointments have proven to be effective in the treatment of eczema, improving skin hydration, reducing itching and redness.

Clinical research also suggests a possible protective role of CBD against UV damage and an interesting use in oral care products.

Not Just Nutrition

Hemp seed oil is confirmed as a natural remedy with extraordinary potential, capable of acting on several fronts thanks to its rich composition and combination of fatty acids, antioxidants, and cannabinoids.

If more clinical studies confirm these results, we could soon see the entry of hemp oil not only as a complementary aid in wound treatment, but also as a key ingredient in dermatological products and cosmeceuticals dedicated to skin regeneration, sun protection, and overall skin wellness.
