The Municipality of Paraná has launched a “cleaning barrier” in the Antoñico stream. This is an innovative initiative to combat water pollution in the area, and this tool is the first step.
It was achieved thanks to a collaboration between the public sector and private companies. It is a floating barrier for waste management that prevents urban solid waste from reaching the Paraná River.
The measure, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of caring for natural resources, is a fundamental step to protect the river ecosystem of the region.
River Care and Teamwork
The barrier, designed with a previous engineering study, is strategically placed near the mouth of the stream to retain plastics and other floating waste.

“We have installed this barrier at the mouth of the Antoñico stream in order to contain waste that should not be in the water,” explained Rosario Romero. She also highlighted the importance of civic behavior to maintain cleanliness.
“As residents of Entre Ríos, we must come together and be responsible for caring for our resources. We decided to support the municipality to change the behavior of not dirtying the river,” said local entrepreneur Pablo Márquez.
The material that accumulates in the barrier will be removed periodically by municipal staff. This task not only facilitates cleaning, but also prevents large amounts of waste from obstructing the flow of water during climatic events. This was pointed out by Julián Hirschfeld, Secretary of Public Services.
A Technological Solution and a Call to the Community
Maximiliano Pérez Viecenz, Deputy Secretary of Environment, provided details on how the barrier works. “All urban solid waste that floats, mostly plastics, is captured so that the municipality can collect them with suitable machinery,” he stated.
The implementation of this system is a direct call to collective responsibility. In this sense, municipal officials reminded that the city has an efficient garbage collection system. Therefore, they requested citizens to deposit their waste in the corresponding containers.

The Problem of River Pollution with Solid Waste
This type of pollution in Argentina is a serious environmental problem. Plastic is the main pollutant of water bodies.
It affects not only aquatic life, but also nearby communities, as these waste materials can reach the trophic networks.
Main Causes
- Open-air dumps: many urban solid waste ends up in open-air dumps and, due to rain and wind, ends up in streams and rivers.
- Poor waste management: although most of the population has garbage collection service, the lack of separation at the source and the disposal of waste in inappropriate places contribute to the issue.
- Industry: while industrial pollution focuses on effluents, solid waste from factories also tends to end up in rivers.
