The dissemination of a video showing the assault and subsequent death of a coypu in the province of Buenos Aires has reignited the debate on the need to strengthen the protection of wildlife and promote greater environmental awareness in society.
The incident occurred on 12 de Octubre Street and was made known by the organization Alianza Animal. The images show an 18-year-old young man attacking the animal repeatedly until causing its death, while another person records the scene with a cell phone.
In addition to the public complaint, the organization filed a criminal complaint for the Justice to investigate the events and determine the corresponding responsibilities. The case sparked a strong social outcry due to the level of violence exerted against a defenseless specimen of native fauna.
An aggression that exposes a broader problem
According to reports, during the attack, other people remained at the scene observing the situation without intervening. The video material evidences a context of indifference towards the suffering of the animal, a situation that concerns organizations dedicated to the protection of biodiversity.
Furthermore, various environmental sectors warned that numerous episodes of animal abuse do not become publicly known, so they consider that this case can serve to highlight an issue that often remains hidden.

However, it is a bailable offense, which is why different experts and environmental groups demand an increase and toughening of penalties to stop abuse and cruelty towards animals.
