Chile is one of the countries with the most expensive healthy diet in South America, according to the FAO

Accessing a healthy diet in Chile costs US$ 5.65 per day, a figure that places the country as the third most expensive in South America, only behind Guyana and Suriname. As a result, 36.8% of the Chilean population cannot afford it.

Global Overview: Fragile Progress Against Hunger

The latest report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reveals the state of food security in the world:

  • Population with hunger: 645 million people suffered from hunger in 2025 (7.8% of the global population).

  • Evolution: Shows an improvement compared to the 688 million at the post-pandemic peak (2022).

  • Risk factors: Armed conflicts, climate change, and rising food prices threaten to stall progress.

  • Most critical region: Africa leads the figures with 20% undernourishment and 56.6% food insecurity.

Situation in Latin America and Chile

In Latin America and the Caribbean, 22.9% of the inhabitants faced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025.

In the particular case of Chile, the report highlights the following key indicators:

  • Cost of a healthy diet: US$ 5.65 per day (3rd place in South America).

  • Excluded population: 36.8% do not have sufficient income to access a healthy diet.

  • Severe food insecurity: Affected 700 thousand people between 2023 and 2025.

  • Overnutrition: 6.3 million adults with obesity were recorded during 2024.
