A Spanish airline promotes decarbonization with SAF Circle: a business alliance for more sustainable flights

The commercial aviation industry faces one of the greatest challenges in the fight against climate change: reducing emissions and committing to decarbonization without compromising global connectivity.

In this context, Iberia has launched Círculo SAF, a pioneering corporate program that brings together large companies to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and move towards a model of cleaner air transport.

Sustainable fuels: a viable and scalable alternative

In sectors like aviation, where electrification is not a viable option, SAF emerges as the most effective solution. These fuels can be used without modifying engines or airport infrastructure, facilitating their large-scale adoption.

According to the European Union, SAF can reduce CO₂ emissions by between 65% and 100% throughout their lifecycle. The IATA estimates a reduction of up to 80%, positioning them as a key tool to achieve the Net Zero Carbon 2050 strategy.

The ReFuelEU Aviation regulation establishes that, starting in 2025, suppliers must include at least 2% SAF in EU airports, marking the beginning of a regulated and progressive transition.

Círculo SAF: business collaboration to accelerate decarbonization

Iberia has invited leading companies such as Amadeus, BBVA, Repsol, and Telefónica as founding members of Círculo SAF. The program allows corporate clients to offset part of the scope 3 emissions generated by business travel and cargo transport through the proportional purchase of SAF.

  • Estimated emissions reduction: between 10% and 30%
  • Direct application: corporate flights and air logistics
  • Collaborative model: open to new companies wishing to join

This approach not only promotes the use of SAF but also encourages its industrial development, generating real demand and accelerating the local production of sustainable fuels.

Spain: sustainable tourism and leadership in renewable energies

As a tourism powerhouse, Spain has the opportunity to lead the air transition towards sustainability. The influx of visitors and the country’s strategic position in renewable energies allow for the integration of tourism with the decarbonization of air transport.

Círculo SAF seeks to make tourism not only a source of income but also a lever for environmental innovation.

Environmental and strategic benefits of SAF

  • Reduction of CO₂ emissions without altering existing infrastructure
  • Compatibility with current engines and logistical cycles
  • Boost to the green economy through public-private partnerships
  • Compliance with climate goals in sectors difficult to electrify

The energy transition in aviation is already underway, and programs like Círculo SAF demonstrate that it is possible to advance with concrete, collaborative, and scalable actions.

Iberia is committed to a model where sustainability and competitiveness are integrated, setting the course towards a cleaner and more responsible air future.
