La University of Buenos Aires (UBA) reaffirmed its leadership on the international stage this year by becoming the only Argentine institution within the top 500 of the QS Sustainability Ranking 2026, prepared by the international consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
The UBA climbed eight positions to reach the 370th place, in a context where most Latin American universities experienced setbacks in the ranking. This advancement consolidates the institution as a regional benchmark in university sustainability.
Argentina’s Progress in an Adverse Regional Context
The QS report revealed that while the Latin American region regressed in sustainability matters, Argentina achieved modest but significant advances.
- 36% of the Argentine universities evaluated improved their position.
- 29% declined.
- Three entered the ranking for the first time.
This balance represents a net increase of 7% in the number of Argentine institutions advancing.
UBA’s Performance in Key Indicators
The UBA achieved solid results compared to regional standards:
- Environmental Education: 94.6 points.
- Equality: 69.1 points.
- Knowledge Exchange: 90.8 points.
- Educational Impact: 64.2 points.
- Employability and Opportunities: 77.5 points.

National Leadership and International Recognition
On the national level, the UBA maintains its leadership. According to Ben Sowter, senior vice president of QS:
“Argentina’s higher education system is widely recognized for its tradition of public access and strong academic reputation, with the University of Buenos Aires standing out among international academics and employers.”
This recognition reinforces the UBA’s position as one of the most influential universities in the region.

Global Context of the Ranking
The 2026 edition of the QS Sustainability Ranking evaluated 2,000 universities from 106 countries, expanding the coverage compared to the 1,750 institutions considered in the previous edition.
- Lund University (Sweden) ranked first.
- University of Toronto (Canada) dropped to second place.
- University College London (UCL) reached third place.
In South America, the University of São Paulo (Brazil) is the only representative among the top 200, occupying the 90th place.
Other Argentine Universities in the Ranking
Argentina has 14 universities in the 2026 sustainability ranking:
- The UBA rose to the 370th place.
- The National University of the Littoral (UNL) climbed eleven positions to 910.
- The National University of Cuyo (Uncuyo) advanced to 921.
- The National University of Rosario (UNR), the National Technological University (UTN), and the National University of the Northeast (UNNE) debuted in the ranking, expanding the country’s geographical presence.
QS Sustainability Ranking Methodology
The QS Ranking has established itself as an international reference by evaluating how universities face environmental, social, and governance challenges.
The methodology is organized into three major categories:
- Environmental Impact: education, research, and environmental sustainability.
- Social Impact: employability, equality, health and well-being, educational impact, and knowledge exchange.
- Governance: institutional management, transparency, and ethical culture.
Unlike other systems, QS requires external evidence of institutional commitment, including the research impact on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of universities as major employers.
The advancement of the UBA in the QS Sustainability Ranking 2026 confirms its role as a regional leader in university sustainability and strengthens Argentina’s position on the international stage.
In a context where much of Latin America is regressing, the UBA demonstrates that it is possible to combine academic excellence with environmental and social commitment, consolidating a model of higher education that looks to the future.
