NASA shows how extreme winter freezes the Chesapeake Bay and revives the memory of the historic ice of 1977

Recently, the United States experienced one of the coldest winters in recent years. Several intense storms and prolonged periods of low temperatures impacted wide regions of the country, a consequence of the extreme winter.

As a result, parts of the Chesapeake Bay froze over. This phenomenon revived the memory of a similar episode that occurred almost half a century ago.

Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the country and one of the largest in the world. Stretching about 311 kilometers, it connects more than 150 rivers and streams with the Atlantic Ocean, covering areas of Virginia and Maryland.

The historical precedent captured from space

The winter of 1976-1977 left one of the most extensive ice covers recorded in the region. At that time, the Landsat 1 satellite documented the magnitude of the phenomenon.

The Multispectral Scanner System captured images between February 7 and 8, 1977. The mosaic, released by the NASA Earth Observatory, showed the ice in shades of blue, green, and white.

According to subsequent NASA analyses, the ice began to form in the upper tributaries in late December 1976. It then expanded towards the center of the bay and reached its maximum extent in early February, covering about 85% of its surface.

Ice dynamics and effects on the ecosystem

The persistent west winds pushed large sheets towards the eastern shores of the Chesapeake and Delaware bays. This generated visible fractures and uneven accumulations in different areas.

Subsequently, as the wind intensity decreased, new layers of ice formed in open areas. In the upper bay, the thickness reached up to 30 centimeters, while in the lower bay it reached 20, with tributaries doubling those figures.

These processes affect salinity, the oxygen exchange, and aquatic life. Additionally, extreme conditions can alter habitats of fish, crustaceans, and migratory birds that depend on the estuary.

The winter of 2025-2026 and the phenomenon in environmental context

During the winter of 2025-2026, the ice in the Chesapeake and Delaware bays was less extensive than in 1977. However, the concentrations in the upper part and its tributaries were significant.

In Claiborne Inlet, on the eastern shore of Maryland, unusual activities such as ice navigation were recorded. At the same time, local fishermen faced difficulties due to trapped boats and restricted access.

Such episodes reflect the increasing climate variability. Although global warming reduces the frequency of prolonged freezes, it also favors more marked extremes. Therefore, satellite monitoring and sustainable management of the estuary are key to protecting one of the most valuable ecosystems in North America.
