Environmental alert in Chaco due to tree felling and soil movement in Caraguatá Park in Resistencia

Neighbors, environmental organizations, and nature advocates express our deep concern about the recent interventions carried out by the Municipality within the Caraguatá Park, in the city of Resistencia.

In the area, in the province of Chaco, there have been works with numerous machines, soil movement and felling of native trees, including quebrachos, causing a strong impact on the ecosystem.

These actions were carried out without clear public information or an Environmental Impact Study being presented, and without signage informing the community about the project intended for the area.

Effects of the intervention in Caraguatá Park

During these interventions, bird nests and wildlife refuges were destroyed, directly affecting the species inhabiting the area and altering its biodiversity.

Caraguatá Park is an area of great environmental value for the city of Resistencia, where natural environments of wetlands, grasslands, palm groves, forest, and native woodland are preserved, essential for the region’s fauna and flora.

Among the species present is the howler monkey, declared a Provincial Natural Monument, which implies the obligation to protect its habitat.

Moreover, this space holds high cultural and ancestral value, as for years it has been worked on alongside Qom communities, sharing knowledge about the woodland and its medicinal plants, many of which were also affected by these interventions.

For over ten years, the group @Misión.eco, along with neighbors, environmental organizations, and communities, has been conducting environmental education activities, awareness, biodiversity surveys, and defense of Caraguatá Park, promoting its conservation and its recognition as a Natural Reserve.

It is worth noting that formal requests for information have been submitted, but so far there have been no clear responses from the authorities, which further raises concern in the community.

Caraguatá Park, a green lung

Caraguatá is one of the last green lungs of the city, and its protection is crucial as Resistencia practically lacks urban natural reserves. The loss of this space would mean a severe environmental setback for the city.

Furthermore, the interventions carried out raise doubts about compliance with current environmental regulations, the Environmental Code, and the principles of environmental protection laws, which establish the need to evaluate any action that may generate environmental impacts beforehand.

The former Caraguatá Park is not an empty lot: it is a living ecosystem, a natural, cultural, and environmental heritage of the city.

Therefore, we request:

  • 🌱 Transparency and access to public environmental information.

  • 🌱 Publication of the corresponding environmental impact studies.

  • 🌱 Respect for the biodiversity and cultural value of the place.

  • 🌱 The protection of Caraguatá as a Natural Reserve.

📢 Caraguatá is the last green lung of Resistencia. Defending it is defending the biodiversity, the culture, and the environmental future of our city.
