The Proyecto Yaguareté organization launched the Binational Jaguar Monitoring 2026. Consequently, it installed more than 250 camera traps in the Green Corridor.
This territory connects areas of Argentina and Brazil. Additionally, it represents one of the last refuges of the Atlantic Forest. The main objective is to preserve the jaguar. Therefore, the aim is to strengthen the regional biodiversity.
The Green Corridor: a vital system for wildlife
The province of Misiones hosts this ecological corridor. Consequently, it concentrates the largest continuous block of jungle in the country.
With nearly 1.1 million protected hectares, the system ensures biological connectivity. Additionally, it allows the movement of species.
Likewise, the region maintains the most important population of jaguars in Argentina. Therefore, its conservation is strategic. This environment is protected by provincial legislation. In this way, sustainable development is promoted.
Scientific monitoring for an endangered species
The monitoring initiated in 2003 has become one of the most extensive in the world. Consequently, it allows tracking the evolution of the species.
According to the latest census of 2024, an estimated 64 to 110 specimens are in the corridor. Additionally, movements and habits are identified. The 2026 operation expands the field effort. Therefore, the aim is to obtain more precise data.
Likewise, the collected information guides conservation policies. In this way, strategies are optimized.
International cooperation for conservation
The work is coordinated with the Brazilian project Projeto Onças do Iguaçu. Consequently, the regional protection is strengthened.
The coordination between both countries is key. Additionally, it allows addressing the territory as a continuous ecosystem.
Likewise, the binational approach improves threat management. Therefore, it increases the chances of survival. In this way, a cooperation model is consolidated. Thus, shared conservation is promoted.
Jaguar conservation tasks in Argentina
In Argentina, jaguar conservation includes multiple actions. Consequently, monitoring with camera traps and GPS collars is implemented.
Additionally, patrols in protected areas are developed. Therefore, poaching is prevented. Likewise, biological corridors and wildlife crossings are constructed. In this way, collisions are reduced.
Environmental education programs are also carried out. Thus, coexistence with local communities is promoted.
A key species for ecological balance
The jaguar plays a fundamental role in ecosystems. Consequently, it acts as an umbrella species. Its presence indicates good environmental health. Additionally, it protects numerous associated species.
