A 1587 map offers clues about the possible location of Noah’s Ark

The Noah’s Ark, a fascinating historical enigma, might have been located on a 16th-century map. This ancient planisphere, created by the Italian cartographer Urbano Monte in 1587, seems to have pinpointed the exact location where the emblematic biblical vessel would rest, long before current technological explorations in the Middle East.

This remarkable piece of Renaissance geography remained hidden from public view for centuries.

The enigma of Noah’s Ark and Urbano Monte’s map

The map in question is the largest known world map of its time, crafted by Monte. This planisphere stands out for its detailed illustrations of continents, unexplored lands, and mythological beings.

However, what is most striking is a small depiction of Noah’s Ark in the mountains of Ararat, in present-day Turkey. This location coincides with the account in Genesis 8:4, where the Ark is described as resting.

Monte’s creation emerges during the Age of Discoveries, a period marked by intensive explorations towards America and Asia, redefining the maps of the era. His work breaks with the conventional of those times in several unique aspects.

Monumental structure: The original map is composed of 60 individual sheets, which when joined form a circular image nearly three meters in diameter. Arctic perspective: Monte chose a north polar perspective, placing the Arctic at the center of the world.

Eastern influence: It is believed that Monte was inspired after a Japanese delegation visited Milan in 1585, providing him with new global perspectives. Public access: The map is available for consultation at the David Rumsey Map Center at Stanford University.

The illustration of the Ark coincides with the Durupınar formation, a boat-shaped mound 29 kilometers south of Mount Ararat. Discovered in the mid-20th century, its size is similar to that described in the Biblical scriptures, fueling the debate about its origin.

Researchers have used advanced technology to study this formation, uncovering details that suggest a non-natural structure. Ground-penetrating radar explorations have identified tunnels and spaces that could reflect the arrangement described in the Bible.

Additionally, infrared thermography has revealed a continuous hull-shaped silhouette underground, although this finding remains a subject of skepticism among scientists.
