Mayors from across the country met in Tucumán to promote climate action policies

The Argentine Network of Municipalities against Climate Change (RAMCC) held its VIII National Assembly in San Miguel de Tucumán, bringing together mayors from across the country along with international delegations from Chile, Paraguay, and Portugal.

In a meeting described as “unprecedented and hopeful”, the Assembly of Mayors for Climate Change gathered in Tucumán representatives from more than 100 cities across the country.

The main objective was to position the environmental agenda as a priority management axis, going beyond waste management to focus on comprehensive strategies for mitigation and adaptation in the face of the climate crisis.

A milestone for northern Argentina

The Director of Environment, Kiyoshi Fortuna, highlighted as a central result the presentation of the first Local Climate Action Plan of San Miguel de Tucumán.

This initiative makes the Tucumán capital the first city in northern Argentina to have a documented roadmap until 2030, designed under the scientific recommendations of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

Axes of climate management

During the meeting, special emphasis was placed on the need for:

  • Data-based management: Using scientific diagnostics on the behavior of rainfall and temperatures to make precise decisions.

  • Climate justice: Prioritizing the protection of the most vulnerable sectors, who are the most affected by climate impacts.

  • Institutional continuity: Ensuring that public environmental policies transcend current mandates.

Towards federal cooperation

The network of municipalities, which already has eight years of experience, continues to expand through the exchange of technical documentation and peer collaboration.

The event included working tables and tours of the Dra. Yolanda Ortiz Environmental Education Campus, consolidating practical learning.

In light of the increasing frequency of extreme climate events in our country, the commitment to maintain these annual meetings was reaffirmed, with the aim of strengthening federal cooperation and transforming local management into a fundamental pillar for national sustainability.
