30 fan-shaped subglacial basins discovered 3 km beneath the ice in East Antarctica

In an unprecedented discovery, a team of scientists has identified a monumental geological structure in East Antarctica. This finding, three kilometers below the icy surface, has been named the East Antarctic Fan-Shaped Basins Province. This discovery completely redefines our understanding of the Antarctic subsurface.

A Fan-Shaped Basin System

Published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the research details a system of 30 subglacial basins. These basins, aligned like the ribs of a fan from a point near the South Pole, have been revealed through radar technology capable of penetrating ice. This structure has remained hidden for millennia, now showing a surprising fan-shaped silhouette.

The discovery was made in one of the most remote and inaccessible regions on the planet. Thanks to technological advancements, scientists were able to penetrate the dense polar ice. The data obtained revealed the presence of extremely ancient sediments, highlighting the secrets that the Antarctic subsurface still holds. This finding has surprised the international geological community.

Analyses indicate that these formations correspond to a colossal geological scar, dating back to times before the separation of the supercontinent Gondwana. This tectonic event was crucial for the configuration of the current continents, and the marks found are silent witnesses to the internal forces that have shaped our planet.

The next step for the experts will be to investigate the formation of these basins and conduct drilling in the area to obtain physical samples. The thorough study of this material will confirm theories about the geological evolution of the area. The Antarctica thus reaffirms itself as a fundamental natural laboratory for science, promising new discoveries in the future.
