A senator from the province of Buenos Aires promotes a law to grant leave for the death of pets

The Buenos Aires senator Marcelo “Chuby” Leguizamón presented a bill in the provincial Senate to create a special leave for public administration workers in the province of Buenos Aires. The proposal seeks to recognize the emotional impact caused by the death of pets and grant a day of bereavement leave.

The leave would be for one working day, usable within three days following the pet’s death. To access the benefit, the employee must present a death certificate issued by a veterinarian, and the pet must be previously registered in an official registry that would also be created by the law.

Project Foundations

Leguizamón argues that the bond between people and companion animals has changed significantly in recent decades.

Law and behavioral sciences have advanced towards the recognition of animals as sentient beings, which is reflected in new legislative initiatives in Argentina and other countries.

The current leave regime in the province does not contemplate situations related to pet bereavement, despite mental health specialists recognizing that these losses can generate significant emotional consequences. Incorporating this leave would allow labor regulations to adapt to new forms of family and emotional organization.

International Background

The initiative takes as reference debates and projects in other countries that have sought to recognize work leaves for the death of companion animals. In some jurisdictions, there has also been progress in regulations that strengthen legal protection and recognition of the human-animal bond.

If the project succeeds, Buenos Aires could become one of the first Argentine provinces to incorporate this type of leave for public employees, initiating a debate that combines mental health, animal rights, and labor regime.

Benefits of Pets

The project is supported by evidence that pets are key members of families and provide benefits to physical and emotional health:

  • Stress reduction: petting an animal releases endorphins and decreases cortisol.
  • Better cardiovascular health: walking a dog helps control blood pressure and prevents a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Companionship and socialization: they prevent loneliness and facilitate interaction with other people.
  • Education in values: caring for an animal teaches respect, empathy, and responsibility, especially in children.

The proposal for pet bereavement leave reflects a cultural and legal change in the way the human-animal bond is understood.

Recognizing the emotional impact of these losses in the workplace is a step towards building more sensitive policies adapted to the emotional reality of families.
