Egypt transforms Giza: ends camel rides and opts for a sustainable tourism model

In recent days, the news went viral that Egypt banned camel rides at the Pyramids of Giza. Although there is no official statement establishing a national ban, a comprehensive modernization project for the archaeological complex is underway, aiming to transform the tourist experience and ensure animal welfare.

The measure responds to reports of animal cruelty and is part of a broader strategy that includes electric transportation, new access points, and modern services for visitors.

Renovation of the Giza Plateau

The project began in 2024 and was consolidated in 2025, with actions such as:

  • New access via the Fayoum road.
  • System of 45 electric buses to transport tourists.
  • Digital ticket sales.
  • Visitor center with modern services.
  • Reorganization of tours to reduce congestion and protect historical heritage.

The initiative seeks to redefine what visitors expect from Giza, combining innovation, conservation, and sustainability.

Animal welfare at the center of the debate

One of the most significant announcements was the alliance between Orascom Pyramids for Entertainment (OPE) and The Brooke Hospital for Animals, a globally recognized organization for the care of working animals.

The agreement includes:

  • Periodic veterinary care.
  • Vaccination programs and preventive treatments.
  • Awareness campaigns for owners.
  • Training for caretakers.
  • Installation of new water points throughout the archaeological site.

“Animal welfare is inseparable from the visitor experience,” stated Amr Gazzarin, president of OPE. Meanwhile, Sherif Foda from Brooke Hospital emphasized that the goal is to turn Giza into a global model of humane and sustainable tourism.

Mixed reactions

Not everyone welcomed the change. Horse and camel owners held demonstrations, arguing that the new routes reduce their job opportunities and affect their main source of income.

Nevertheless, authorities maintain the project as part of a long-term strategy to modernize the complex, improve heritage conservation, and prepare the site for a greater flow of visitors.

Beyond camels: responsible tourism

The transformation of Giza reflects a global trend towards sustainable tourism. The incorporation of electric transportation, digital services, and animal welfare programs seeks to balance three dimensions:

  • Conservation of historical heritage.
  • Modern experience for visitors.
  • Protection of the animals still working in the area.

More than an isolated ban, the change in Giza is part of an ambitious project to modernize one of the world’s most iconic monuments.

The commitment to sustainability and animal welfare makes the Pyramids a benchmark for responsible tourism, where people, animals, and historical heritage hold equal importance.
