The return of the giant tortoises to Floreana Island, after 180 years, represents a significant milestone in ecological conservation in the Galapagos Islands. This event marks the beginning of an ambitious ecological restoration project.
The return of the giant tortoises boosts ecological conservation
A total of 158 tortoises descended from the original lineage have been released, symbolizing resilience and the collective effort to recover a species declared extinct in the 19th century.
The Charles Darwin Foundation and the Ministry of Environment lead this initiative, which aims to recover the lost biodiversity. This project not only intends to restore the tortoise population but also to rehabilitate the ecosystem as a whole.
With the release of these specimens, the Galapagos aim to reverse the extinction of three of their fifteen native giant tortoise species, including that of Floreana. The local community, along with various organizations, plays a crucial role in this conservation effort.
The Galapagos National Park Directorate heads this mission, considered one of the most challenging in its history. Long-term ecological restoration is the main goal, in order to return the initial functionality to the island’s ecosystems.
This collective work has also allowed significant achievements, such as the rediscovery of the pachay (Laterallus spilonota), a rare bird not observed since Charles Darwin’s first expedition.
Giant tortoises play a crucial role as “ecosystem engineers,” as they help in seed dispersal and shape the local vegetation. The presence of these species is vital for the regeneration of landscapes.
The success of this program reflects the importance of genetics in modern conservation. Genetic research revealed that tortoises found on Wolf Volcano carried Floreana ancestry, allowing the creation of a specific breeding program.
With the support of numerous organizations such as the Jocotoco Foundation, Island Conservation, and Galapagos Conservancy, the project seeks to ensure the conservation of ecosystems and the well-being of local communities.
