The cooperative Creando Conciencia, dedicated to environmental care and the labor reintegration of former waste pickers, has joined the social organization Crisol, with over 30 years of experience in managing social projects, to work on waste recovery in rural areas.

Strategic Collaboration

“We have been working in coordination with this new leadership of Crisol, led by Margarita Carratú Freire, thinking about comprehensive approaches in urban and rural areas,” explained Ramiro Martínez, president of Creando Conciencia and the Argentine Confederation of Associated Cooperative Workers (CONARCOOP).

Carratú Freire added: “With a focus on Human Rights, we are joining forces between rural communities, companies, governments, and organizations to promote responsible practices. Together with Creando Conciencia, we are creating tools that promote respect and rights in the agricultural sector, aligned with global paradigm shifts, such as European Union Resolution 1115, which demands greater commitment to environmental sustainability and social from agricultural producing countries.”

Addressing Rural Challenges

A key concern is to prevent young people from leaving their rural communities in search of jobs in the city. “We want them to find a viable and sustainable future in the countryside,” emphasized Carratú Freire.

Martínez pointed out the existence of numerous recyclers working in rural areas or small towns. “It is a mistake to limit waste recovery only to urban areas; that’s why we also talk about the concept of rurality for this activity.”

Implementation in Buenos Aires Localities

Creando Conciencia is already active in inland localities of Buenos Aires such as Bayauca (partido de Lincoln), Rojas, and Pergamino.

“The working method does not vary in its conception, but in population distribution. Consumption remains the same, whether it’s a soda, a canned product, or tea. There is no differential characterization. There is a comprehensive approach to a province and a country as federal. In fact, you don’t have to go far from Buenos Aires City to see a different geography, but the approach is the same with some differences in traceability and logistics,” commented Martínez.
