The northern lights are the result of a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged solar particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, creating a luminous and colorful glow. In fact, this 2024 was characterized by the presence of these colorful lights, but experts assure that next year will be a true cosmic spectacle.
Experts from the Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, led by NASA and NOAA, state that the peak will be in 2025. This means that in the coming months there will be unique opportunities to enjoy these northern lights.
According to NASA, the cycles of the sun can last about 11 years, during which it will go through periods of calm and others of greater intensity. In this sense, the space agency stated that the cycle began in December 2019, and since then its geomagnetic activity has been increasing.
In fact, “cannibal” solar storms could be seen, which occur when one solar storm reaches another, causing a gas cloud that enhances the result of northern lights. It is even expected that during the next year, solar eruptions and coronal mass ejections will be more frequent, which is why they will reach their peak.
Where will the northern lights be visible in 2025?
The luckiest countries will be Finnish Lapland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway, as they will become the ideal destinations to witness this northern lights show. Even Norway is already prepared to witness this cosmic event.
But also, the north of Canada and Alaska are other destinations that are already prepared to welcome this dance of green, red, purple, blue, and pink lights, over the snowy mountains and endless forests of these countries. In this sense, Canada’s Northwest Territories, within the “auroral oval,” have become one of the best places to appreciate this wonderful event.
The term “aurora boreal” was coined in 1619 by Galileo Galilei, in honor of the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek god of the north winds, Boreas.
