The new species, named Lycodon poyarkovi, or Poyarkov’s large-toothed snake, was identified in the forests of Quang Binh province, located in central Vietnam. This discovery came after years of explorations aimed at studying the rich biodiversity of the region.
Initially, scientists observed four specimens that appeared to belong to a known species. However, a detailed analysis revealed morphological differences confirming that it was a completely new species.
Distinctive Characteristics of Lycodon poyarkovi
This snake presents unique features that differentiate it from other species in its genus. Some of its most outstanding attributes include:
- Size and length: It can reach up to 81 centimeters long.
- Striking morphology: It has nasal pits and large eyes, as well as enlarged teeth, from which it derives its name.

Despite its appearance, which may resemble venomous krait snakes, Poyarkov’s large-toothed snake is completely harmless.

Lycodon poyarkovi is a nocturnal species that inhabits an area of hidden forests. Researchers observed it near ponds and streams, both on the ground and climbing trees. Its diet seems to consist mainly of frogs and other smaller snakes.
Despite its harmless nature, this snake faces threats due to its appearance, which often leads to it being mistakenly killed.
The Legacy of Nikolay Poyarkov
The name of the new species honors the herpetologist Nikolay Poyarkov, whose work in the Indo-Burmese region, which includes Vietnam, has been crucial for advancing knowledge about reptiles. Poyarkov was the first to suspect that these specimens represented an undocumented species.
Distribution and Potential Range
So far, specimens of Lycodon poyarkovi have only been found in two locations in Quang Binh. However, experts believe that its distribution could extend to neighboring provinces in Vietnam and Laos.
Its identification was based on the analysis of physical characteristics such as scale arrangement, coloration, and body size, although genetic analysis has not yet been conducted.
