In addition to their beauty, these parakeets are known for being very sociable and noisy birds, often forming small groups or flocks.
They are small birds, ranging in size from 20 to 22 centimeters in length, and have a lifespan in the wild of up to 10 years.
Efforts to protect the golden parakeet
Despite the threats facing the golden parakeet, there are conservation initiatives aiming to protect this endangered species.
Conservation organizations and local authorities are working on forest restoration projects and the creation of protected areas to ensure the survival of golden parakeets in the Amazon.

An example is the golden parakeet reintroduction project supported by the Institute of Forestry Development and Biodiversity (IDEFLOR-Bio), an agency from the state of Pará. They are carrying it out in collaboration with the non-profit organization Lymington Foundation.
It started in 2017, with the first group of golden parakeets released into the wild in January 2018, at the Utinga State Park in Belém, the capital of Pará. This city will precisely host this year’s COP30 climate summit.
