How is the Golden Parakeet: endangered in the Amazon and coveted in the black market

Most read

The golden parakeet (Guaruba guarouba) is a species of parrot native to the Amazon, which is in serious danger of extinction. In addition to this, it is highly sought after in the black market for pets.

The bird is endemic to Brazil and inhabits the lower basin of the Tocantins River. It is visually striking with its vibrant yellow plumage and green tips on its wings, as well as being noisy.

The main problems it faces are habitat loss and the lucrative business of illegal pet trafficking, as this is a highly protected species.

Therefore, it is also more expensive and more appreciated by those who promote this terrible business: buyers and collectors.

Thus, the illegal pet trade, combined with the serious habitat loss, has reduced the population of golden parakeets to less than 10,000 wild individuals, a small number for such a vast biome like the Brazilian Amazon.

Characteristics of the species

In addition to their beauty, these parakeets are known for being very sociable and noisy birds, often forming small groups or flocks.

They are small birds, ranging in size from 20 to 22 centimeters in length, and have a lifespan in the wild of up to 10 years.

Efforts to protect the golden parakeet

Despite the threats facing the golden parakeet, there are conservation initiatives aiming to protect this endangered species.

Conservation organizations and local authorities are working on forest restoration projects and the creation of protected areas to ensure the survival of golden parakeets in the Amazon.

An example is the golden parakeet reintroduction project supported by the Institute of Forestry Development and Biodiversity (IDEFLOR-Bio), an agency from the state of Pará. They are carrying it out in collaboration with the non-profit organization Lymington Foundation.

It started in 2017, with the first group of golden parakeets released into the wild in January 2018, at the Utinga State Park in Belém, the capital of Pará. This city will precisely host this year’s COP30 climate summit.

The importance of preserving the Amazon and its biodiversity

The conservation of the golden parakeet is not only crucial for the survival of this species, but also for the overall health of the Amazon ecosystem.

The Amazon is known as the “lungs of the planet”, playing a vital role in regulating the global climate and biodiversity. Protecting species like the golden parakeet contributes to the preservation of this invaluable ecosystem.
