A juvenile Andean condor is rescued and released in San Luis thanks to the action of residents and park rangers.

Thanks to the collaboration of neighbors, local authorities, and park rangers, a young Andean condor was rescued in Luján, San Luis.

They managed to release it back into its natural habitat on the same day that World Andean Condor Day was celebrated.

The rescue of an Andean condor: key collaboration and commitment

This is great news for native wildlife conservation. The animal had become stranded in the water.

It all started on Saturday, when Lorena Godoy, a local resident, spotted the young condor perched on some rocks, unable to fly, on the shores of Luján dam.

She immediately notified the police authorities and the team from the Quebrada de Las Higueritas Protected Natural Area. Shortly after, the animal fell into the water and was rescued by another neighbor, Ignacio Segre, in his kayak. He managed to reach it over 1500 meters from the shore.

The bird was then handed over to park ranger Samuel Olivieri, who transported it to a warm place to allow its feathers to dry, a key action for its recovery, especially considering the low temperatures of the mountainous region.

The rescue was made possible thanks to a chain of citizen solidarity, coinciding with World Andean Condor Day, celebrated every July 7.

A collective effort for an endangered species

They managed to rescue it among neighbors.

The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is one of the most emblematic birds of South America and is threatened in much of its distribution area. Its conservation depends on both institutional actions and the commitment of local communities.

“The collaboration of the neighbors and the Luján Municipality was crucial. When dealing with a endangered species, every life matters,” said Olivieri. “Thanks to the kids from Luján, the neighbors, and everyone who made this rescue possible,” he added.

After confirming that the specimen had no wounds, injuries, or blows that justified its transfer to a specialized center, the technicians decided to release it back into its natural habitat. Thus, it was ensured that it returned to the wild in good health.

This rescue not only allowed saving the life of a young Andean condor but also represents an inspiring example of community action in favor of biodiversity.

The situation of the condor, an endangered species

At the regional level, the species is classified as “near threatened” according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). In Argentina, the Andean condor is legally protected and is considered a species of special conservation importance.

Despite its large size and longevity, the Andean condor has a slow reproductive rate: it lays a single egg every two to three years, making any population loss critical.

Main threats to the species

  • Intentional or indirect poisoning: for example, when toxic baits are used to control predators such as pumas or foxes, condors are often collateral victims.

  • Illegal hunting: still occurs in some regions due to myths and misinformation.

  • Collision with power lines or becoming entangled in garbage.

  • Habitat loss and reduction of natural carrion, especially in areas where large wild mammals are decreasing.

  • Environmental pollution, including exposure to lead from ammunition remnants in dead animals.
