This week a yaguarundi was found in Entre Ríos and successfully rescued. The animal (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) belongs to a species of native feline in America that is endangered in Argentina.
It was found in a private house in the town of Federación, where it apparently arrived while chasing a dog.
It was kept there for two days until the intervention of the Cattle Rustling Brigade of the Provincial Police.

The rescue was made possible thanks to an anonymous tip. Personnel from the Wildlife Inspection Directorate, under the Ministry of Economic Development of Entre Ríos, went to the site and confirmed it was a yaguarundi, also known as “gato moro” or “gato eirá”.

After being examined by a veterinarian from the Yaguarundí Project, it was confirmed that the specimen was in good health.

The yaguarundi is one of the most elusive felines in South America. Its population has drastically decreased in recent decades due to habitat loss, road accidents, and poaching.
In Argentina, this species is endangered according to the latest categorization by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Nation.
Its presence in the Mesopotamian region, in provinces like Entre Ríos, Corrientes, and Misiones, is becoming increasingly rare. Therefore, this discovery represents a significant event for the conservation and monitoring efforts of wild species.
How is the specimen they found doing
Once rescued, the feline was taken to the “El Potrero” Conservation Center in Gualeguaychú, a facility that serves as a refuge for wild fauna. There, it will remain under veterinary observation and in an environment that recreates its natural habitat.
Provincial authorities emphasized the importance of not keeping wild animals in captivity, as this puts both the animal and people at risk.

They also highlighted the need to report these types of situations to the relevant authorities.
