As they highlighted, over the years, the place played “a fundamental role in the education, research, and rehabilitation of marine fauna” and operated on the same premises under a long-term lease contract that ended in 2022.

The park, located next to the Punta Mogotes Lighthouse, has been operating in the same location since its opening, under a 30-year lease that expired in 2022.

Faced with this scenario of impossibility to agree, Aquarium Mar del Plata was forced to “permanently close as of March 31.”

The future of the animals

One of the fundamental aspects of the closure of Aquarium Mar del Plata is the destiny of the animals that are part of its facilities.

In this regard, the center owned by The Dolphin Company specified its future. “All park animals, born under human care, will be relocated to national and international aquariums and zoos,” it was indicated.

Regarding the dolphins, there was a clarification. “Our seven dolphins, along with their Caribbean-born parents, will be moved to an oceanarium in that region,” they reported.

As for the sea turtle “Jorge”, they mentioned that it will be released into its natural habitat. “Successfully completing its rehabilitation cycle,” they emphasized.

This process aims to ensure the well-being of the specimens that, in many cases, lived their entire lives in controlled environments and couldn’t adapt to life in the wild.

The company expressed regret over “the cessation of operations at our Marine Fauna Rehabilitation Center,” which they described as a “significant loss both locally and regionally.”

Finally, they expressed gratitude for “the support and trust.” In their farewell, they reaffirmed their commitment to marine fauna conservation. “With the commitment to continue working for the well-being of marine fauna in any environment we find ourselves in,” they concluded.
