Animal abuse continues to be a growing concern in the province of San Juan. In this context, protectors and social organizations often carry out, in silence, an essential task to safeguard the lives of dogs, horses, and other species.
Among these actions, the project of San Juan businessman Mauricio Barceló stands out. For some time now, he has provided shelter on his farm located in Pocito, where he receives wounded or abandoned animals for their recovery and subsequent responsible adoption.
However, the increase in cases led him to plan a larger and more organized space. Thus, he began to outline a shelter with the capacity to house around 70 dogs, with adequate and safe infrastructure.

Infrastructure designed for animal welfare
The project includes a 2,000 square meter plot near his farm. There, the construction of kennels, a secure perimeter fence, and areas dedicated to care and sanitary protection are planned.
According to the calculations made, the necessary investment is around eight million pesos. This amount includes materials, labor, and structural improvements to ensure decent conditions for the animals.
Although the promoter will contribute part of the money, the magnitude of the project requires community support. So far, thanks to campaigns on social networks and the commitment of close associates, he has managed to gather about half of what is needed.
The environmental and social role of shelters
Animal shelters fulfill a function that goes beyond individual rescue. Firstly, they reduce the presence of abandoned animals on public roads, which positively impacts environmental health and urban coexistence.
Additionally, these spaces act as transit centers towards responsible adoption. There, animals are rehabilitated, they receive veterinary assistance, and conscious ownership is promoted as a key tool against abandonment.
In San Juan, all shelters are private and managed by protectors or civil associations. Therefore, each new space represents a crucial reinforcement in the fight against abuse and animal overpopulation.
Moreover, these projects foster a culture of empathy and environmental education. By raising awareness about respect for other species, they contribute to building more responsible and sustainable communities.

How to collaborate with the project?
The goal is to reach the estimated eight million pesos to complete the work. Currently, approximately 50% of the required amount is available, so citizen support is crucial.

In this way, the initiative seeks to establish itself as a model of solidarity and environmental action. Because protecting animals not only involves safeguarding lives but also strengthening the balance between society and nature.
