Caged Chickens: What Can Consumers Do About Abuse

It is proven that chickens in cages live under greater fear and stress. Even Argentina is one of the countries in the region with more companies committed to eliminating the use of eggs from animals in these conditions.

In these places, the immune response of the chickens is reduced compared to those raised in cage-free systems and with an enriched environment.

For this reason, the NGO Green Commitment urged consumers to join in consuming only in places that respect the animals’ lives.

“Animals on farms are often overlooked, despite their cognitive abilities and suffering. We focus on pets, but we ignore those in the food production chain,” warned Romina Viscarret, Director of [Synergy Animal](https://noticiasambientales.com/ong/una-prestigiosa-entidad-internacional-reconocio-a-la-ong-sinergia-animal/) in Argentina.

Focusing on this concern, Green Commitment launched a new campaign to raise awareness. The aim is to start considering some practices, such as knowing where and what is consumed.

“Check if the company where you stay, eat, and buy your food has a policy of using eggs from cage-free hens,” they indicate.

“Let’s unite in consuming only in places where they respect the animals’ lives,” they emphasize in the NGO.

The report of the fifth edition of the Cage-Free Tracker pointed out that, during 2024, 21 of the 47 national or presence in the country companies that are part of this project were able to successfully carry it out.

According to the analysis of the Cage-Free Tracker, 138 companies joined the elimination of the use of eggs from caged hens, 20% more than in 2023.

This shows that more and more companies are committed to ensuring animal welfare. However, of the 61.59% of the companies that reported their implementation, only 49.28% did so in detail.

In Argentina, less than half of the companies presented specific reports on their results in the country or the region.
