Córdoba will have a free veterinary hospital to provide assistance to abandoned animals 24 hours a day

The city of Córdoba approved the creation of its first free municipal veterinary hospital aimed at the emergency care for street dogs and cats, abandoned or without an identified owner. The measure was endorsed by a large majority in the City Council.

The new facility will operate 24 hours, every day of the year, and will focus on providing emergency veterinary care. Additionally, local authorities indicated that the system could include socioeconomic evaluations in cases of animals with an owner.

The initiative seeks to expand the animal health coverage in sectors where there are often insufficient resources to afford private veterinary treatments. In this way, the municipality aims to strengthen public policies related to animal welfare and urban health.

Furthermore, the project includes interventions in situations referred by the Justice or by security forces, especially in cases of abuse, abandonment, or accidents in public areas.

The new center will operate in the San Vicente neighborhood

The veterinary hospital will be installed in the former Dermatological Dispensary of the San Vicente neighborhood, located on Corrientes 3086 street. It will also house Córdoba’s fourth Spaying Center.

Additionally, the system will incorporate appointments via WhatsApp to facilitate residents’ access to spaying campaigns and health checks. Authorities believe this method will streamline care and improve service organization.

On the other hand, the municipality clarified that the hospital will not seek to replace the work of private clinics, but rather complement the existing veterinary system in the city. They also emphasized that the facility will not function as a permanent shelter for animals.

The proposal was promoted by Mayor Daniel Passerini along with councilor Juan Balastegui. However, during the legislative debate, questions arose regarding the operational capacity and the working conditions planned for the staff.

The benefits of this initiative for the environment and public health

The creation of a free veterinary hospital can generate positive impacts both on animal welfare and urban environmental quality. One of the main benefits will be the early care of injured or sick animals that currently remain unattended on the streets.

Moreover, the expansion of spaying campaigns will help control the overpopulation of abandoned dogs and cats. This reduces situations of abuse, road accidents, and the spread of urban waste caused by uncared-for animals.

On the other hand, public health specialists highlight that preventive veterinary care helps to reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases, that is, those that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Additionally, strengthening animal welfare policies promotes a more balanced urban coexistence and fosters greater social awareness about the responsible care of pets and domestic fauna.

Debate on animal protection and urban policies grows

In recent years, different Argentine cities have begun to incorporate programs related to the ethical control of animal populations and community veterinary care. Córdoba now joins this trend through a public model focused on emergencies and prevention.

Furthermore, environmental and protectionist organizations consider that this type of initiative helps to reduce animal abandonment and strengthens citizen education strategies related to responsible ownership.

However, some sectors argue that it will still be necessary to expand resources, infrastructure, and personnel to meet the growing demand in a large city like Córdoba.

As the implementation of the new veterinary hospital in the San Vicente neighborhood progresses, the municipality seeks to consolidate a comprehensive policy that combines animal health, health prevention, and environmental improvement within the urban space.
