Entre Ríos releases 300 pacu specimens in the Paraná Medio reserve: a strategic action to recover native species

The government of Entre Ríos carried out the release of 300 juvenile pacú specimens (Piaractus mesopotamicus) in the Paraná Medio multiple-use reserve, located in the La Paz department.

The measure is part of a comprehensive plan for the restoration of fish fauna aimed at reversing the critical population status of native species in the Paraná basin.

Conservation and repopulation of native species

The initiative, driven by the Ministry of Economic Development, responds to the sustained decline of various fish species due to environmental factors and pressures on aquatic ecosystems.

The objective is not only to conserve the typical fauna of the region but to advance in a process of progressive repopulation. The idea is to allow the recovery of the ecological balance in environments where the presence of pacú has become exceptional. Currently, this native species has a very low population size in Entre Ríos, making actions like this a significant contribution to its recovery.

Environmental compensation and corporate responsibility

The release of the specimens is also part of an environmental compensation measure required from a company responsible for ecological damage.

In this way, the remediation is directly oriented towards the recovery of local fauna, ensuring a concrete and verifiable territorial impact.

Population monitoring and citizen participation

One of the central aspects of the operation is population monitoring. The fish were tagged, and if recaptured, fishermen must contact the number on the tag to report size, length, and location.

This data will provide key information on:

  • Migrations.
  • Growth.
  • Survival.

These are fundamental inputs to assess the evolution of the species in the basin, information that did not exist until now.

Collaborative and institutional work

The project is developed collaboratively with the Directorate of Natural Resources and the Directorate of Rural Crimes of the Entre Ríos Police (PER).

Participants in the operation included:

  • Pablo Aceñolaza, director of Protected Natural Areas of the Secretariat of Environment, along with his technical team (Germán Rivero and Joaquín Sallevane).
  • Representatives from the Directorate of Natural Resources.
  • Personnel from the Cattle Rustling Police, led by General Commissioner César Primo.
  • Fabricio Mesquida, municipal president of Piedras Blancas.

Ecological and social impact

The release of pacú specimens in the Paraná Medio reserve represents a concrete advance in the conservation of aquatic biodiversity and in building an environmental management model that combines:

  • Ecological restoration.
  • Community participation.
  • Corporate responsibility.

Additionally, it strengthens citizen awareness about the importance of protecting native species and ensuring the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems in the region.

The operation in La Paz marks a milestone in the environmental policy of Entre Ríos, by integrating conservation, repopulation, and scientific monitoring into a single strategy. The release of 300 juvenile pacú not only seeks to recover an emblematic species of the Paraná basin but also to reaffirm the provincial commitment to biodiversity and ecological balance.

The continuation of this type of action will be key to facing current environmental challenges and ensuring that future generations can enjoy a living, diverse, and healthy Paraná River.
