Why it is important to monitor them

“Flamingos are bioindicator species, meaning they are very sensitive organisms to changes in their habitat and environmental conditions, reflecting the state of the surrounding environment,” said Natalia Piñones, head of the Protected Wild Areas Department of CONAF Tarapacá.

“Moreover, they are of great ecological importance because, of the six flamingo species in the world, three inhabit the southern cone: the Chilean or Andean flamingo, the Andean flamingo, and the James’s flamingo. All three are represented in the national parks administered by CONAF in this region, making their monitoring and census essential,” she emphasized.

Additionally, they reported sighting 16 other bird species: 406 individuals, including the Andean goose (156), giant coot (25), lesser rhea (44), and speckled teal (42) among the most numerous.
