Viralization of the stone-throwing attack on a sea lion and authorities’ response

The sea lion was cornered against a hill the whole time with no possibility of returning to the sea.

The viralization of the video allowed the authorities to initiate an investigation into the incident, aiming to identify those responsible.

Local residents stated that the attackers were not from Carahue, suggesting they might be vacationers.

What to do if witnessing an animal abuse incident in Chile?

If you are witnessing an act of animal abuse, you should immediately call Carabineros, the competent authority to act while the crime is in progress.

If the crime has already occurred, Carabineros cannot intervene immediately, but you can and should file a complaint.

You can do so in person at the nearest Carabineros station, PDI, or Prosecutor’s Office. Although it is the Prosecutor who leads the investigation of a crime, those who carry out fieldwork are Carabineros, PDI, or other institutions by order of the Prosecutor.

Alternatively, you can do it online by visiting www.comisariavirtual.cl and filling out a form with the details of the crime. After completing the request, Carabineros forwards the data to the Prosecutor’s Office to initiate an investigation.

The information you need to make the complaint includes:

  • 1) Date, time, and exact address where the incident occurred
  • 2) Recordings or photographs of the animal to show the injuries, its surroundings, and any possible audiovisual evidence.
  • 3) Detailed account of the events
  • 4) If possible, indicate witnesses and the perpetrator of the crime
