The border collie Tsunami went from suffering abuse and abandonment to becoming one of the most recognized rescue dogs in Venezuela.
Since joining the emergency organizations in 2017, he has participated in multiple humanitarian missions and has been key in the rescue of nearly 300 people, including 25 trapped under rubble after the seismic doublet of magnitude 7.1 and 7.5 that shook the northern coast of the country on June 24.
The work in recent earthquakes
One of his most recent rescues occurred in San Bernardino, Caracas, where a 60-year-old man was trapped under the remains of his building.
His handler, Jorge Beens, called for total silence before releasing Tsunami, who quickly marked the spot where the survivor was located. The team took three hours to reach him, but the dog’s signal was decisive in saving his life.
With his distinctive eyes — one blue and the other brown — Tsunami is considered a hero. After each rescue, he receives applause, although Beens insists that they are a recognition of the joint work of firefighters, police, civilians, and rescuers.
International experience
Before the disaster in Venezuela, Tsunami had already stood out in the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in 2023, consolidating his reputation as an international search and rescue dog.
His ability to detect survivors under collapsed structures makes him an invaluable resource in emergency situations.
Human and health impact
The WHO warned that the number of victims from the earthquakes in Venezuela could increase considerably once search operations conclude. So far, the government has reported 2,595 dead and 12,400 injured.
Additionally, the Pan American Health Organization warned about the risk of disease outbreaks such as measles in shelters, due to low vaccination coverage and lack of access to safe water.
The quality of water supply has become a priority to prevent epidemics in the most affected areas.
