The new members were named Tupá, Arawi, and Copán. The birds will join the **reintroduction of the scarlet macaw** in the North of Iberá, as stated by the Foundation.

“We are going through the fifth **breeding season** of the project, and for the fourth consecutive year, the pair of Nioky and Sopa are successfully raising their chicks,” they reported on their social media.

## Development and monitoring of the new scarlet macaw chicks
The Foundation also emphasized that “the three little ones **are growing strong and healthy**, with minimal interventions from the team, which is responsible for monitoring their health and growth.”

“The birth of this new brood of chicks is excellent news. It strengthens the [recovery process of the scarlet macaw](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/en-los-esteros-del-ibera-liberaron-a-otros-cinco-guacamayos-rojos/) in the skies of Iberá,” they concluded in the statement.

## The importance of the scarlet macaw in Iberá
The scarlet macaw (*Ara chloropterus*) is a **colorful and large-plumed bird** that used to inhabit the jungles of northeastern Argentina. This includes the gallery forests of the Paraná River and surrounding areas in the north and center of the **Iberá Park**.

It is a frugivorous bird that plays a crucial role in the functioning of the forests by **dispersing large fruits and seeds** of various native tree species, palms, and vines.

The Iberá Natural Reserve represents an almost unique opportunity to recover the presence of this authentic “jewel of the air” in Argentina.

Currently, the reserve has a large expanse of **protected habitat**. There are enough forested islands that would allow hosting a stable population of scarlet macaws. Additionally, Iberá has a group of institutions and experts in the **restoration of extinct** and endangered populations.
