Illegal cat breeding facility shut down: cats were being sold for $900,000

The police authorities of the City of Buenos Aires closed an illegal cattery of cats this week in the Constitución neighborhood.

The Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Unit (UFEMA), under the direction of Prosecutor Carlos Fel Rolero Santurian, gave the order on Wednesday. They were selling specimens of Scottish and Siberian breeds for around $900,000.

The animals lived in overcrowded and deplorable conditions in terms of hygiene. They also lived with 20 rabbits, a dog, and other animals.

They detected the illegal online sale of cats for prices ranging between $760,000 and $900,000 per specimen.

Once the address, located on Pavón at 1600, was located, the raid was carried out by the CIJ, with the Environmental Crimes Division of the City Police.

The General Directorate of Domestic Dogs and Cats and the General Directorate of Environmental Control (DGCONTA) of the Environment Subsecretariat of the city government also intervened.

They rescued a total of 29 cats, a dog, 20 rabbits, 2 cockatiels, 2 Australian parrots, 8 pigeons, a canary, 7 hens, and a rooster.

The animals were in poor environmental conditions and showed serious injuries and evidence of lack of care and hygiene. They also did not have any veterinary medical care certificate.

What happens next in the case

The specimens were taken into custody by different NGOs, which received the animals under judicial custody and will be responsible for the necessary care and veterinary attention.

Prosecutor Rolero Santurián charged the woman responsible for the cattery as “criminally responsible” for the crimes of animal cruelty and infringement of local animal health police regulations. She was also charged with violation of the Wildlife Conservation Law.

On the other hand, DGCONTA inspectors immediately and preventively closed the house and confiscated all the cats, as well as the other non-domestic animals.
