Lomas de Zamora allows the transportation of pets on buses to facilitate access to the Animal Hospital

The Municipality of Lomas de Zamora took a significant step in animal welfare by enabling the transport of pets on bus lines that connect different neighborhoods with the Animal Hospital. The initiative aims to remove obstacles that for years hindered many families’ access to free veterinary services.

The new regulation arises in response to a need expressed by numerous residents who do not have private vehicles to move their pets. Consequently, emergency situations, health checks, or vaccination campaigns often proved difficult to carry out.

Additionally, this policy strengthens the relationship between animal care and public health, promoting a community more committed to responsible ownership and disease prevention.

Requirements to ensure safe travel

With the aim of ensuring proper coexistence within the transport units, the municipality established a series of conditions for the transport of domestic animals.

On one hand, smaller animals must travel in carriers or bags specially designed for their transport. This seeks to provide comfort to both the pets and the rest of the passengers.

On the other hand, larger dogs must use a leash and muzzle, remaining under the supervision of an adult throughout the journey. Additionally, specific schedules were set to avoid inconveniences during peak user circulation times.

The Animal Hospital as the center of veterinary care

The Lomas de Zamora Animal Hospital has been consolidated in recent years as a reference center for the entire Southern Zone of Greater Buenos Aires. There, spaying, vaccination, clinical care, and surgical interventions of varying complexity are carried out.

However, the distance between some outlying neighborhoods and the facility posed a challenge for many residents. As a result, many pets were left without regular check-ups or preventive treatments.

Now, with the possibility of using public transport, greater attendance at scheduled appointments and an improvement in the health indicators of the entire district are expected.

An initiative that brings the community closer to animal welfare

The implementation of this measure provides multiple benefits for the community. Firstly, it promotes access to vaccination and sterilization campaigns, fundamental tools for the ethical control of the urban animal population.

Furthermore, greater health coverage helps reduce the spread of zoonotic diseases, those that can be transmitted between animals and humans. This strengthens public health and improves the quality of life for the entire population.

On the other hand, the use of public transport to transport pets can reduce the need for individual trips in private vehicles, promoting more efficient mobility with less environmental impact. It also fosters a culture of respect towards animals and consolidates more inclusive and sustainable urban models.

Towards more animal-friendly cities

From the municipal areas related to animal health, they highlighted that the measure is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening the welfare of dogs and cats throughout the district.

At the same time, transport companies were notified about the new guidelines and drivers will receive basic training to properly manage these situations during the routes.

In this way, Lomas de Zamora positions itself as one of the pioneering municipalities in the Greater Buenos Aires area in incorporating mobility policies adapted to the needs of pets. The initiative represents progress that combines social inclusion, public health, and animal protection, consolidating a more sustainable vision of the relationship between people, animals, and the urban environment.
