Mendoza released six rehabilitated birds of prey to restore the provincial ecological balance

Raptors rehabilitated in Mendoza regained their freedom after a successful recovery process at the provincial Ecopark.

Six native specimens returned to their natural habitat in a coordinated operation aimed at strengthening the region’s ecological balance.

The Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecopark of Mendoza carried out the release of three caracaras (Caracara plancus) and three Harris’s hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus).

The operation was carried out in coordination with the municipalities of Las Heras and Luján de Cuyo.

How the comprehensive rehabilitation of raptors in Mendoza was carried out

The specimens had been rescued through citizen reports or referred by control agencies.

During their stay at the Ecopark, they received specialized veterinary care, flight readaptation, and behavioral evaluation before being deemed fit for release.

The director of Biodiversity and Ecopark, Ignacio Haudet, highlighted the importance of this initiative.

“These species play a fundamental role in the health of ecosystems and their possession is illegal,” the official noted.

Haudet also emphasized that the release of these birds not only returns freedom to the specimens.

It also strengthens biodiversity and promotes environmental education in the province.

The key ecological functions of raptors in Mendoza

The caracara acts as a natural cleaner of ecosystems. This bird feeds on carrion, insects, and small animals, fulfilling an essential sanitary function in the environment.

Meanwhile, the Harris’s hawk is increasingly observed in urban areas.

This species controls populations of rodents and birds, contributing to the natural balance of the areas where it resides.

Both species face constant threats that jeopardize their survival:

  • Illegal hunting of specimens
  • Wildlife trafficking
  • Progressive loss of natural habitat
  • Capture for domestic possession

Recommendations for responsible coexistence

The Directorate of Biodiversity of Mendoza reminded the community that these raptors are protected by law.

The illegal possession of wildlife can lead to sanctions for those who violate current regulations.

The authorities provided recommendations for harmonious coexistence with these species.

Not approaching nests, avoiding disturbing the specimens, and keeping small pets under control are fundamental measures.

In cases of injured wildlife or illegal trafficking, citizens can contact the Ministry of Energy and Environment.

Available channels include the official website, email, or the emergency number 911.

This initiative represents a significant advance in the conservation of the provincial biodiversity.

The recovery and release of raptors contribute to maintaining healthy ecosystems and strengthens environmental awareness in Mendoza.
