This atrocious event has not only shocked the country, but it has also prompted an immediate criminal investigation to identify and bring to justice those responsible for such a cruel and unacceptable act.

Bruno, a 7-year-old bloodhound dedicated to service, was found lifeless in his shelter in Taranto last Friday.

His owner and trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, revealed with pain that the loyal dog had ingested pieces of dog food intentionally mixed with nails.

In an emotional and heartbreaking message shared on social media, Caressa did not hesitate to urge the authorities to “catch the criminals before I do,” highlighting the magnitude of his pain and his thirst for justice.

Meloni speaks out about the hero dog

The news of the murder of the hero dog Bruno has resonated up to the highest levels of the Italian government. The Prime Minister herself, Giorgia Meloni, who had been photographed with Bruno on a previous occasion, paying tribute to one of his heroic rescues, strongly condemned the act.

She described the murder of the animal as “vile, cowardly, and unacceptable,” reflecting the sentiment of a nation in mourning. In addition, the legislator and animal rights activist, Michael Vittoria Brambilla, has taken concrete actions, filing a formal complaint with the prosecutors.

New law with harsher penalties

Her action is supported by the new legislation that enhances penalties for killing or mistreating animals, a law that she herself has promoted and that recently came into effect.

The public outcry has spread throughout the country. Vittorio Feltri, influential editor of the newspaper Il Giornale, joined the collective voice of condemnation by publicly stating that the hero dog had done “more for Italian society than many citizens,” highlighting the invaluable contribution of the dog to the community’s well-being.

Suspicions and a personal struggle of his trainer Bruno, the hero dog

Arcangelo Caressa, in his quest for answers and justice, was direct in expressing his suspicions that he himself could be the true target of the perpetrators of this crime.

He stated that the brutal murder of Bruno could be a deliberate tactic to threaten him or send him an intimidating message.

Caressa, who has dedicated much of his life to the noble work of rescuing dogs from illegal fights and abusive situations, revealed that he had already received threats prior to this tragic event.

With this information, he provided the police with the names of two individuals they consider suspicious, hoping that the authorities will further investigate in that direction.

Strengthening of penalties: the Brambilla law in action

The recent legislation on animal protection in Italy, popularly known as the Brambilla law, came into effect on July 1, just days before Bruno’s death, giving even greater significance to this case.

This regulation specifies severe penalties for those who commit acts of animal cruelty, establishing sentences of up to four years in prison and a fine of 60,000 euros (equivalent to approximately 70,000 dollars).

Furthermore, the law contemplates even harsher punishments if the act of abuse is carried out in the presence of minors or if it is broadcast through online platforms, aiming to deter these practices and protect public sensibility.

Despite the recent enforcement of this law, Vittorio Feltri, like a significant part of Italian society, has emphasized that the penalties should be even stronger.

He vehemently stressed that animals, especially those who, like Bruno, the hero dog, act with extraordinary courage and dedication to serving society, deserve a respect and legal protection that fully reflects their immeasurable value.
