Seville Bullfighting School will not open due to lack of students, a sign that people reject this cruel practice

The municipality of La Algaba, in the province of Seville, launched a public call to reactivate its Bullfighting School in 2026. The institution needs at least ten students to start the new course.

However, after opening the registration period between November and December, no applications were received. Consequently, the training activity could not be launched.

The City Council, responsible for managing the center, requested the public and potential sponsors to promote initiatives that would sustain the project. In this way, it seeks to preserve a practice considered historical in the locality.

The school has accumulated 25 years of experience in training related to bullfighting. However, the lack of interest highlights a generational and cultural change affecting much of the country.

Training, requirements, and project viability

The program offered two weekly training sessions for a monthly fee of 25 euros. Additionally, applicants had to be at least 10 years old and registered in the municipality.

These conditions aimed to strengthen local roots and ensure continuity. However, the current context seems to have reduced the appeal of the proposal among the new generations.

Therefore, the start of the course was conditional on reaching the minimum of ten enrollees. Without this base, the City Council considers it unfeasible to sustain the training structure.

Despite this, the authorities maintain the expectation of reversing the situation through the recent public call. Thus, the continuity of the center will depend on the community response in the coming months.

Bullfighting in Seville: tradition, economy, and ecological debate

Bullfighting has a strong historical root in the province of Seville, where numerous localities have been the birthplace of bullfighting figures. Additionally, it is part of celebrations and economic circuits linked to livestock and festivities.

However, the practice faces a growing debate from the environmental and animal welfare perspectives. Various organizations question the impact on animals and promote alternative cultural models.

In parallel, defending sectors argue that the breeding of fighting bulls helps conserve dehesas and associated ecosystems. These extensive exploitations, they argue, maintain traditional landscapes of southwestern Spain.

Nevertheless, the decline in students in La Algaba reflects broader social transformations. Sensitivity towards animal treatment and environmental sustainability increasingly influences cultural decisions.

Therefore, the future of the Bullfighting School not only depends on reaching the minimum quota but also on how the debate around tradition, ethics, and sustainability evolves in the Sevillian region.
