Species protection: San Juan launches campaign to prevent wildlife roadkills on tourist routes

During the winter break weekends, the **Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of San Juan**, in coordination with the **Conservation Directorate**, will launch the campaign **”Slow down”**, a preventive action to **reduce wildlife roadkill** on [tourist transit routes](https://noticiasambientales.com/turismo/explorando-la-naturaleza-ruta-ecologica-para-conectar-con-el-ambiente-lleno-de-vida/).

The operations will take place on **Saturdays, July 12 and 19**, in strategic areas of the province, and will focus on **educating drivers and visitors** about the risks of driving without caution in natural areas.

Key areas and schedule

**Saturday, July 19**:

  • **La Ciénaga** Protected Area (Jáchal, RN Nº 40)
  • Calingasta **phytosanitary control** (RP Nº 149)

Recommendations for responsible driving

The technical teams invite all drivers to implement safe driving practices:

  • **Respect speed limits** in natural areas
  • **Pay attention to wildlife crossing signs**
  • **Report incidents** to environmental authorities
  • **Support educational and local conservation campaigns**

“We want roads to be spaces for coexistence, not collision. Caring for wildlife is also caring for San Juan’s environmental identity,” stated the Secretariat.

Tourism and environmental awareness

The increase in traffic during vacations puts greater pressure on fragile ecosystems. This campaign is part of the province’s effort to **balance tourism with conservation**, adding **preventive actions, training, and interinstitutional coordination**.

Authorities remind that wildlife serves **essential ecological functions** and that each unreported roadkill is a silent loss that can be prevented with **simple attention and respect for nature’s timing**.
