Suspected greyhound racing taking place in Balcarce fields: Justice steps in

Justice and animal protection agencies are investigating a possible clandestine network of greyhound races in rural areas of Balcarce, Buenos Aires province.

The case arose from an anonymous complaint that alerted about illegal activities related to animal abuse in rural areas of the district.

As reported by the local newspaper Diario La Vanguardia, the complaint was received by the Subsecretariat of Citizen Protection of the municipality, which immediately involved the Decentralized Prosecutor’s Office of Balcarce.

The incident was also reported to the security forces to determine if dog races were actually taking place. This practice has been prohibited by law in Argentina since 2016.

Greyhound races sparked all kinds of criticisms leading to the enactment of the law due to abuse, abandonment, and exploitation of animals. Animal defense organizations have been denouncing their persistence for years, despite the legal prohibition.

Meanwhile, animal protection associations celebrated the investigation into this possible violation and urged authorities to intensify controls in rural areas, where there is usually less oversight.

The call for awareness and vigilance

Dog races were banned in 2016.

Furthermore, it underscores the need to continue strengthening public policies for the protection of domestic and wild fauna, especially in contexts where illegal activities can thrive with greater impunity.
