The jungle reclaims its ancient paths: increase in jaguar and puma sightings

What was once exceptional is now constant. In a period of just six months, the Triple Frontier (Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina) has recorded an unusual concentration of appearances of jaguars and pumas. The episodes range from sightings in national parks to urban incursions, livestock attacks and rescue operations.

Specialists analyze this series of events with a combination of enthusiasm for conservation and concern about the conflict with human settlements.

Chronology of sightings (May – July 2026)

1. Argentina: Confirmed presence in the Green Corridor

  • May (National Route 101, Misiones): Drivers observed a jaguar crossing in broad daylight between Iguazú National Park and Comandante Andresito. The finding reaffirmed the importance of the Green Corridor as a natural transit space.

  • May 27 (La Morita Private Reserve): A camera trap captured the nocturnal movement of another specimen within the protected forest.

2. Paraguay: Conflict with livestock activity

  • June (Santa Rita, Alto Paraná): Producers from the Fulgencio R. Moreno colony reported attacks on cattle, large footprints, and the sighting of two large felines.

  • Impact: The event reopened the debate on agricultural expansion. Biologists point out that deforestation and habitat loss force predators to seek food in rural areas.

3. Brazil: Shocking urban rescue in Foz do Iguaçu

  • June 27 and 28 (Três Lagoas and Jardim Cedro neighborhoods): A 75 kg male jaguar was filmed walking on paved streets and, the next day, resting in a home’s yard.

  • Capture operation: Firefighters, Environmental Police, and the Onças do Iguaçu project safely sedated the feline and transferred it to the Bela Vista Biological Refuge.

  • The mystery of “Tape’y”: The specimen was named Tape’y (“without path” in Guarani), as it did not have a satellite monitoring collar, demonstrating the existence of individuals whose movements are still unknown.

4. Continuous presence of pumas and new sightings

  • June 8 (Itaipú, Brazil): A puma was spotted near the Itaipú Hydroelectric Plant.

  • July 18 (Marechal Cândido Rondon, Brazil): A group of people filmed a jaguar resting on a tree branch near Lake Itaipú, remaining calm and not showing aggressive behavior.
