Mar del Plata experienced once again an unforgettable sight. This week, several whales were spotted swimming just a few meters off the coast, in the southern area of the city. The phenomenon caught the attention of residents and visitors who were able to witness the majesty of these cetaceans in their natural habitat.
The animals were recorded between Punta Mogotes and the Lighthouse, in an ideal weather context: calm sea, no wind, and intensely green waters. The images captured by drones showed active and synchronized groups, moving in harmony with the waves.
About 600 meters from South Beach resort, at least two groups composed of three and four specimens were spotted. Although not an unprecedented event, each appearance generates astonishment, excitement, and a valuable opportunity to reflect on the relationship between humans and the ocean.
These sightings, increasingly common, fascinate not only for their beauty. They also indicate significant changes in the whales’ migratory patterns, a phenomenon that scientists relate to alterations in sea temperatures and food availability.
Migratory Changes and Ocean Signals
Traditionally, whales visited the coasts of Mar del Plata in August and September, when they traveled from Brazil to the waters of Patagonia. However, now they are observed even during the winter, suggesting an adaptation of their migratory route.
These changes may be linked to global warming, marine pollution, or variations in ocean currents. Whales, like many marine species, act as indicators of the marine ecosystem’s health. Their presence or absence in certain areas speaks of disturbed balances.
The main character of these sightings is generally the southern right whale. This cetacean, declared a Natural Monument in Argentina, is essential for maintaining biodiversity in the ocean. It feeds on small organisms, transports nutrients in its movements, and helps regulate the carbon cycle.
An Opportunity for Conservation
Seeing whales so close to the coast is an extraordinary experience, but also a responsibility. The appearance of these animals must be accompanied by measures to ensure their well-being and respect for their environment.
Uncontrolled navigation, plastic waste, underwater noise, and industrial fishing remain ongoing threats. Therefore, promoting responsible tourism practices and supporting conservation policies is key to protecting not only the whales but also the ecosystem they inhabit.
