The Marine Wildlife Rescue Station “Guillermo Indio Fidalgo” has launched its annual volunteering call to rescue Magellanic penguins.
This service is carried out on the beaches of the Province of Buenos Aires, where thousands of penguins arrive in critical condition after their first migration every year.
The proposal for the 2026 season seeks committed assistants during the most intense migratory season of the year.
The rescue center, located in Puerto Galván, Bahía Blanca, focuses its activity between mid-February and April or May.
During these months, juvenile specimens undergo their first migration from colonies like Punta Tombo to Brazilian waters.
However, on the way, they may get lost or injured, and many end up on the beaches of Buenos Aires.
Therefore, the rescue center notes that once a year, “they like to open their doors during a time of heavy work“.
As Pablo Petracci, a specialist from the organization, points out, this stage represents the period of greatest activity for the center’s team.

Why the penguins need help
The young Magellanic penguins arrive at beaches like Pehuén Co, Monte Hermoso, Marisol, or Reta in delicate conditions.
Their lack of experience and the reduced availability of food cause frequent strandings in a state of malnutrition, dehydration, and hypothermia.
“The Magellanic penguins nesting in Punta Tombo, for example, begin to migrate towards Brazilian waters, and some are in poor condition,” explained the Rescue Station.
This phenomenon makes penguin volunteering a fundamental piece of the regional conservation system.
The tasks and requirements of volunteering to assist the penguins
The volunteering program to rescue penguins includes specific responsibilities aimed at the recovery of the specimens. The main activities are:
- Feeding the rescued animals
- Participation in beach rescue tasks
- Maintaining hygiene of the premises to prevent infections
The only mandatory requirement is to be over 18 years old. No specific training is required, although time and commitment are demanded to dedicate at least one full day a week from 9 to 16 hours throughout the season.
The Station clarifies that it does not provide transportation or accommodation. For this reason, the volunteering for the penguins is mainly intended for local people who can continuously integrate into the activities.

How to join the volunteering to rescue and care for penguins
The 2026 call for volunteering to rescue and care for penguins on the beaches of Buenos Aires remains open and can be accessed through an online registration form.
The Rescue Station will later hold an informative meeting with interested parties to learn about the facilities and confirm participation.
The program will extend until the recovered specimens can be reintegrated into their natural habitat, usually between April and May.
This initiative adds to the center’s historical work, which since its creation has attended to hundreds of marine animals affected by sea conditions and interaction with human activities.
The penguins represent one of the most representative species of stranding cases in the Buenos Aires region.
