The rescue of wildlife involved five monkeys that were found locked in a box wrapped in tape during patrol tasks in the province of Salta.
The situation was noticed by personnel from the National Gendarmerie near Puerto Chalanas, a strategic point where territorial surveillance managed to stop the transport of the specimens before they continued their journey.
This detection resulted in the immediate safeguarding of the animals and the initiation of a judicial intervention for a possible violation of wildlife laws.
The operation was carried out by members of the “Agua Blanca” Section, belonging to the Squadron 20 “Orán”.

Wildlife Rescue
The officers were on foot patrol when they spotted an individual carrying the box.
It should be noted that this was not the result of a vehicle checkpoint or a scheduled inspection, but of a direct observation during surveillance tasks, highlighting the importance of preventive patrolling in critical areas for species trafficking.
Upon inspecting the package, the agents confirmed that inside there were five live specimens. Official reports detailed that they were of the species Sapajus nigritus (capuchin monkey) and Callithrix spp. (tamarin monkey).
The fact that both species were found together evidenced that it was an irregular transport of wild animals and not a fortuitous domestic incident.
After the discovery, actions focused both on the legal situation of the carrier and on the preservation of the specimens.
The monkeys were placed under custody and moved to minimize health risks, following legal protocols. Meanwhile, the individual involved was taken to the Subunit to complete the corresponding procedures.
The case was framed under an infraction of the Law 22.421 of Wildlife, legislation that protects animals and penalizes their illegal capture, transport, or trade.
Although the event may seem isolated, the legal framework places it within the complex problem of illegal species trafficking, allowing for a formal investigation to begin beyond the simple rescue.
The Decentralized Prosecutor’s Office of Orán took command of the judicial intervention and issued the guidelines to follow.
It was ordered that the animals be handed over to the Animal Protection Foundation “Patitas en la Calle”, an organization responsible for their care and managing their future reintegration into the natural habitat. This step linked the security work with a specialized assistance instance.
The focus on reintegration is fundamental, as it transcends the seizure of the specimens to prioritize their recovery.
The monkeys were not only removed from an inappropriate transport condition, but they were also assigned a professional space to assess when they can return to nature. This demonstrates that the State’s intervention did not end in sanction, but in ensuring real protection for the affected wildlife.
Finally, the location of the operation provides context on the effectiveness of the controls. Puerto Chalanas is an area of constant flow of people and goods that requires continuous surveillance.
In this scenario, the foot patrol was key to noticing a concealment maneuver (monkeys in a sealed box) that could have been overlooked in other border contexts.
