Ibero-America accelerates the energy transition towards renewables, strengthening security and reducing external dependence

Ibero-America is driving a rapid energy transformation towards renewables, taking advantage of its vast potential in natural resources and the growing capacity to generate clean energy. This movement aims not only to improve the region’s energy security but also to reduce dependence on external sources.

Ibero-America drives the energy transition with renewables

During a meeting held in Lima, which brought together institutional, business, and academic leaders, the need to expand renewable energies, electrify local economies, and build more robust and interconnected networks was highlighted. The region is well-positioned to lead this change, focusing on public policies that favor decarbonization and provide incentives for investments in clean energies.

Public policies are playing a crucial role in promoting these initiatives. Favorable regulatory frameworks and clear decarbonization goals are attracting investments, strengthening investor confidence, and fostering a conducive environment for sustainable development.

Experts agree that to ensure Ibero-America’s energy future, it is essential to advance electrification, improve regional interconnections, and increase sustainable investments. The II Sustainability and Energy Day in Ibero-America, organized by Redinter and ESAN University, emphasized that the region has exceptional conditions to become a key player in the global energy transition.

The region has abundant renewable resources, biodiversity, and technical talent, making it a strategic place to lead decarbonization and increase its energy independence. However, it is not enough to increase renewable energy generation; it is also crucial to modernize transportation and distribution infrastructures to ensure an efficient and reliable energy supply.

In the Ibero-American context, strengthening national interconnections is a key element to take advantage of energy surpluses, improve supply stability, and increase the resilience of electrical systems. With an increasingly electrified economy, sectors such as transportation and industry are expected to increase their use of electricity from clean sources, thus reducing carbon emissions and improving economic competitiveness.

Ibero-America must continue accelerating its transition towards renewable energies, exploring new opportunities to modernize its productive systems. However, it is vital that this transition be inclusive, considering existing social and territorial inequalities. The Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) highlights the importance of not leaving behind the most vulnerable communities during this process.

Furthermore, it is emphasized that the success of this transition depends on effective public policies, regulatory stability, and social legitimacy. Ibero-America faces a historic opportunity to become a global reference in sustainability and energy security, provided it can foster investments, strengthen its electrical networks, and ensure a fair and resilient transition in the face of climatic challenges.
